Business Owners Unite !!

Since the QHW will not interview the flip side of this issue, several local business owners have started a petition of signatures of local customers who oppose the local smoking ban.

Please take time before Monday to stop in to your neighbor business owner and let our city alderman know that they know what is best for their business.

One thought that come to my mind is why did CFSFQ wait till this weekend to ramrod the smoking ban to the city council ? Most business owners are occupied with Superbowl weekend that that no opposition would occur. ???

I offer a question to anyone supporting bans. The bar and restaurant business is fiercely competitive, and the people running venues are smart enough to do everything they can to increase their bottom line. If banning smoking really were good for their business, wouldn't they have discovered it by now, and wouldn't that make laws mandating bans unnecessary?

Chief Walker has suggested a in home "early warning" weather system that alert people in their homes whenever the city's storm warning system is activated.

The activation would be performed by the Quincy/Adams County 911 center, which also can activate the outdoor warning system whenever a tornado is reported.

Walker said the individual warning devices are viewed as a voluntary alternative to the existing storm warning system, which not only uses outdoor warning sirens, but also relies on local TV and radio stations to broadcast tornado warnings.

Cost to the city: Not stated, but did not see the word "FREE"
Cost to Homeowner: $200 - $400 each
Annual Fee: $50 - $75 a year

From day-to-day weather forecasts to warnings of deadly storms, NWR is always available, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The broadcast schedule consists of messages which are repeated every three to five minutes and are routinely revised to provide up-to-date information.

During severe weather or other potentially hazardous events, the regularly scheduled programming is interrupted to substitute severe weather (including warnings, watches, etc.) or other hazardous informational messages. Special NWR receivers can be activated, sounding an alarm indicating that important information soon follows. Jacksonville Police Dept. files for Chapter 11

Jacksonville police say no one was arrested for drunken driving all weekend.

Jacksonville revelers have a fleet of designated drivers at their disposal.

Twelve sponsors, including bars and restaurants pay 125 dollars a month for the "Safe Ride" bus service.

The West Central Mass Transit District will offer rides from eight p-m to three a-m every Friday and Saturday through March 17th.

For two dollars, riders can go one way to any destination in the city. Drivers made regular stops along a route of local bars and also take calls for service.

Smoking In Quincy Survey Results...

A survey conducted in December by Quincy Fire showed 51 percent of the 362 registered internet users said they support "Let the Owners Decide" and feel smoking should be left up to the individual business owners to decide.

LILLINGTON, N.C. — A woman attacked a man in his genitals during a Christmas party, injuring him badly enough that he needed 50 stitches, authorities said Friday. Rebecca Arnold Dawson, 34, was charged with malicious castration in a fight early Tuesday at a party hosted by the 38-year-old man's girlfriend, police said.

All three were heavily intoxicated, police Chief Frank Powers said.

Dawson is accused of grabbing the man's genitals. Police said a weapon was not used. He declined to elaborate.

This is funny, but true.

Taxis - City - QPD - DUI's

Denied a request from David J. Peterson for a taxicab/limousine owner's license. Police Chief Rob Copley recommended denial based on the results of a background check. He also said Peterson does not have a permanent address in the city. During a public hearing in November, several representatives from other taxicab/shuttle services said they felt there is not enough business in town to support an additional service.

OK...This burns my ass.

1st. Has anyone read the city code on taxi service ?? It's 12 pages long !! WTF ?? The only thing that this guy didn't have to submit to City Council is a sperm sample !! This is WAY too much for a simple taxi service. Here is Springfield IL Taxicab operator's license and registration. Here is Rock Island city Code. Seem like they are more inviting to a new taxi business.

2. A check with the circuit clerks page shows only one David J. Peterson and has 1 citation. And it's for animal at large ??? Don't seem like a felon to me...

3. "Peterson does not have a permanent address in the city" ?? When did business owners have to live within the city ???? Must of missed this one. Wal-Mart, Sears, K-mart, pack up, you guys are out of here !!

If you asked current retail stores if Quincy really needs a Sam's store and you'll get the same response. Is this the way we want to regulate business in the city ??? Hope not.

This city could use another taxi service and if there is not enough service..? Let the free enterprise system work. I will have to say, seeing that the QPD is hammering DUI's in this city and when another cab company tries to start up and the Police Chief denies it, it looks bad.

What has this city done to free enterprise ???
