My Turn

What Burns My Ass:

  • Notice that the speakers so far for a smoking ban are women?
  • What is the big secret of the coalition not releasing what they distribute to the city council?
  • If the mayor and city council members want some feedback, why don't they add a page on the city's web site for this?
  • Week 4: City Councils speakers -6 / Public Hearings - 0. Hiding something? Why?
  • If the coalition states, on their web site, that "community members may attend but only those who have an interest in making Quincy smoke-free will be allowed to participate in the discussion." How are they going to conduct a "public hearing"?
  • Written request to speak under suspended rules by Jeff Bergman, 1413 College Ave., Assistant Manager of Panera, on the business side of the smoke-free issue, both before and after. How about something more than a year of data?
Your thoughts?

Truth is it took others to Raise the issue then put a years worth of work into it .

If they are having a "public hearing" but will not allow anti-ban speakers, then it is NOT a public hearing OR a discussion. It is "preaching to the choir".

If these "hearings" are being done as "public" thing, i.e. under sponsorship of government to serve the city's purpose, the coalition will be in violating the civil rights of anti-ban speakers. Even if it's NOT that kind of "public" hearing, it speaks to the morality of what the coalition is trying to force down our throats that they will not allow free and open discussion.

But then I've said their ultimate intent is quite clear from the name of their group. The full and total banning of any smoking ANYWHERE in Quincy.

They're as bad as the temperance goons were early in the 20th century. And we know how well THAT Prohibition worked out...

The ILLINI burn my ass

Damn it damn it damn it

Anonymous said...

Bergman, he's my boy, and he's speaking against the ban? I'll offer him Cardinal tickets, he'll be supporting the ban in no time!

Anonymous said...

Honestly, I'm for the ban, but I've heard the city council won't do anything as far presenting an ordinacne. I've heard the councils plan is table the action indefinately. You smokers can rely on the inherent ineffectivness of the city council and it's reluctance to enter into controversial issues. I think all this debate is much to do about nothing. No one on the council has a pair enough to sponsor/propose a smoking ban.

The council gets mad when they they get "put on the spot", they need to realize before the run and get elected that they may have to deal with difficult issues, everything isn't a rubber stamp (from last meeting we saw that rubber stamp is a dirty word at 8th & Maine) issue, and that they may have to get in their and get their hands dirty.

Anonymous said...

The city council needs to hear BOTH sides of the issue. All they are hearing is a one sided statements from the smoking ban side.
If the city tables it "forever" that would be a good thing. It changes nothing. Business owners will go on deciding how best to run their business. Like it should be.
I don't think it take "a pair" to do anything in this situation. A group has came before the council and trying to push "their" agenda down the throats of the city.
If it is such that the "city" should decide to do this, put the proposal on an election.

Anonymous said...

Points well taken, but i don't think an election should decide the issue, not a good thing to put public safety issues on the ballot (could you imagine seat belt, speeding laws, food safety issues being on the ballot)?

I'm beyond the debating atthis point (been called too many names, called too many naems LOL), was fun, though, helps being unoffendable. Going into the prognosticating stage, which I believe doesn't look too good for the ban. Talk to anyone around the state in the know, they'll tell you that Quincy always has had an isolatory existence in the state, in a way. Because other communties have put bans in, Quincy will not, even if it's good for Quincy! But Quincy will likely suffer in ways because of this, just as it did in the "Forgotontonia" era (public health now, instead of no roads). Worst thing the ban folks could have done was bring in the lung gal from Springfield, even though she was SPOT ON with her message and rhetoric, was the most effective speaker by far, most insightful messsage, because she was from out of town, her message will likely go unheard.

Can we get Commodore Perry to steam into Quincy Bay?

Fireman, guess you're not a lawyer, or a lay person whp's heard of the idea of a thing called "precedence".

I got yo ass on this one!

For real, it can't be that bad if other communites are doing it! It took a while for everyone to get on board with putting flouride in drinking water, seprate BR's for women and men, and inventing the wheel, and letting women vote! This smoking ban will catch on, too, hopefully, with a little prodding of the CC! Word has it Virg may come though and be our savior!

Anonymous said...

Fire, what tavern do you run, anyway?

Anonymous said...

And I don't thuink the bar's and returants will suffer if a ban is implemented! The real attraction, of going out, is meeting and visiting with OTHER PEOPLE! The cigs may be cut out, but the people will still be there! You may see a small drop off initially, but the people will be back! Alcoholism has been decrsibed as the "lonely disease", so regardless of whether or not you can smoke, as long as alochol and people are there, the customers and the money will be there also. No one likes to drink alone. They are proving this in Springfield, no bars/rest have closed due to the ban! And all the alcoholics have been able to sustain their addictions.

Anonymous said...

1. The fact, state, or right of preceding; priority

WTF does this have to do with smoking?

Anonymous said...

2:38

Like bartenders are a reliable sources of information, give me a break! No pubs have closed. Also, baretenders are not known as the best business people, why are the bars here in Quincy known as "10th and Main, 109 & Wash, 17th & State"? I'll tell ya why, cause they cahnge hands so often, peole can't remember what the're being called for the moment. And these solid citizens are the people we're sposed to be worried about? F--- you!

2:45

Ya, precedence, dumbass! Let me dummy it down for ya. What do judges look for when deciding "what is right". Were you in the back seat in law school, or when you were hung over? Take it out of the legal context, if you could, for a second. Other good, responsible communties have, in a way, established a kind of precedence when they put the bans in. The precedence centers around the concept that public heatlh is more important/trumps the ind's rights to smoke and owners rights to decide. I know, you're acting dumb about it, cause that's the part you disagree with. Nontheless, precedence has been established in this issue (Spring, Bloom, Chi, etc). You can say about it what you want, say it isn't right, un-american , whatever, but that's what you're dealing with! The ban folks, on the other hand, are dealing with a reluctant-to-act CC, cept for Virg, I still hear he's coming through for the ban!

Fire, think of precedence as a kind of "legitimatized sheeple" if that helps ya, buddy!

Anonymous said...

So if good things happen in other places, and they may happen here, but if they happen here then they "bad" things, just becauce they didn't happen to happen here first? Having trouble with the "Phillip Morris" funded logic. Let's see, you can go out in Bloomington, Springfield, and not be subjected to carcinogens by careless assholes, but if you go out in Quincy, you should be exposed to cancer, because Quincy is/should be exempt from public heatlh ordinances, because pub owners are important people, even though they come and go.........

All you assholes do here is haul water for the big tobacco lobby, addicted jerks.

Quincy Fire said...

Well.

I see this is getting a little out of hand from the last few posts.

I would like to encourage people, when writing letters to the editor of the QHW, to be responsible. A guy fom Payson recently wrote that he smoked for years, and is in his 50's, and there is nothing wrong with him..... I wouldn't want to be him at his next chest x-ray, that's a crap shoot I wouldn't want to be involved in.

Also Melanie Wolf, to the effect of you can be exposed to 1 1/2 to 2 hours of smoke daily, and it won't harm ya? Hello? I hope Melanie never worked in healthcare. 400 + carcnogens for 2 hours daily, and it shouldn't harm ya? Does Melanie tour with Death Cheaters International?

Just don't think people should be spreading junk/whack science at this time. Be responsible with your spew! No wonder kids grow up and chooose to smoke, if this is the crazy advice they get! Listen to the MD from the Blessing Cancer center if you want "for real" advice on smoking, she spoke at CC meeting. Melanie Wold, get a clue! You made about as much sense as Polly Welcher.

thier paycheck maybe???

This makes them little more than hipocrits! They represent Adams County but they think only a portion of the county (namely the city of Quincy) should ban smoking. What about business's in payson, Liberty, Camp Point, Ursa, or Lima???? If it is so bad for us Quincians then its not bad for our neighbors and county colleagues???

My personal spin on this ban--- what country are we living in?
It is not the government's place to 'put a ban of no smoking' on a country-city-county or anyplace.
I am 'smoke free for 15 years' female & I am also a Medical Professional.
I choose not to smoke and I in my own home I can say 'no smoking'-- although that is MY personal choice and my personal right.... IN MY OWN HOME. But, it is not the governments right to do this.
Each business, office ownership, and individual can 'make that choice-to be smoke free but we are a Free Democracy and it is the indivuals responsibility and their own accountability to 'their own best intrests of healh for self and those they are around!
Yes it is NOT healthy but again - it is NOT the government's right to determine something such as this-when anyone can go into almost any retail establishment selling goods & purchase them. Age control yes. But not of structure of government control of the people such as this ordinance.
Thank You for my opportunity to express my views and it can be done with language far above what I see some of you choose to use.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the comments by Melanie Wolf. I am Melanie Wolf. I am a nurse and have been for 40 years. Get a clue. Many more people smoked when I was a child. If your theory is right, there would be no one alive past 50 or 60. All dead from 2nd hand smoke. Everyone knows smoking is not healthy, and it stinks. The point sir is the loss of our rights imposed by the government. This is too socialistic for me. Wait till someone gets a wild hair and wants to take away one of your rights that you enjoy.

Anonymous said...

For you folks who are gung ho on the smoking ban, I hope you only leave your homes from 3a.m.-4a.m. Did you know; exhaust from internal combustion engines, including diesel and gasoline powered engines contain over 100 individual hazardous chemical components. When combined, this can result in as many as 10,000 chemical components. BENZENE,POLYNUCLEAR AROMATIC HYDROCARBON, FORMALDEHYDE, BENZOFURAN, CARBON MONOXIDE NITRIC OXIDES, most of which are carcinogens. This data is from OSHA. So do you suggest we hook up our horse and buggy? Or is this an inconvenient truth?

What fantasy land do you live in? The govt tells regulates our entire exsistence. You go to work in an emmission controled car, drive the speed limit to work (if your license and registation has been obtained, and if you are okay enough that they even give you a license), you beter have insurance, wear your seat belt, park where you're told, make sure you are not .08 intoxicated, taxes are taken out of your wages, you best not sexually harass anyone at work, your employer better not be polluting the environment, you better be working withing OSHA's guidelines, your employer better be paying you at least the minimum wage, don't hit a construction worker on your way home from work, if you do the sign says it is a fine & jail term of x amount......

Why do you think the govt can't/won't/shouldn't regulate smoking in public also?

Your anti-smoking crowd rhetoric has a circa 1990's Missouri back-woods "Freeman" ring to at (and lack of reason). Go live with them and smoke all you want.

In the 'headlines of California'--In California-An updated smoking ordinance, similar to the Public Health Institute's model ordinance regulating smoking in multiunit residences and elsewhere throughout the city would be a great place to start.

Yet, a 12 year old can go to the doctors, tell them they have headache's and are given the 'consent' to take to the supplier and buy medical marijuana. DAAAA!!!!
Are you for that in Quincy too?

Tell me how this makes sense? A 'person who makes the choice to smoke tobacco' is going from city wide-to personal homes and housing. YET-- an illegal drug which causes 'instant possibilities of danger'-- can be done without question or consent.

Illinois does not require annual emission tests on cars. You hope your vehicle emission is within standards of operation. I lived in a state for several years that did require that-and many a car failed and needed repairs in which to pass. So, does Illinois 'have' to come up with that just because 'everyone else-states do?'

It all comes down to 'the more rope you give them' -- in BIG BROTHER living and controlling your life-- the MORE BIG BROTHER is going to take away from you. BIG BROTHER - GOVERNOR of ILLINOIS is taking more from most of you than any of you would like. And who voted him in? Maybe some of you who want all the gov-controls! The more you give - the more they will take & the more you will lose of your personal rights.

http://www.news10.net/display_story.aspx?storyid=25446

Me-- I'm a 'smoke free' person but have the choice & sense to make the choice's of where I go - and where I sit- and let the tax's these smoker's want to pay into our state-- keep doing so.

They know the 'possibilities of consequence's to their health-- yet-- what about my friend who just had lung lobes removed and on chemo-- never has smoked/neither does spouse and nor does the circle of their friends. Not from 'second - hand smoke'. By the way I too am a medical professional. Would be great that 'everyone' choose to be smoke free BUT BIG BROTHER does not need to be the one to tell them. As with quitting smoking, 'A PERSON HAS TO WANT TO'.
The more of Big Brother = the closer to your loss's of Freedom and more the standards of communisum that can engulf a country- inch by inch!
Do you want to be there?

Anonymous said...

8:47

Communism has already prevailed in this country, why you bitchin about it now? At least we can be communist and have clean air.

Anonymous said...

Yes, there certainly is communism in the United States- but prevailing????---at least not yet- and if your using your brain cells you had better hope and pray it never is prevalent.
The last national CPUSA ticket -- headed by Gus Hall and Angela Davis -- was fielded in 1984 (36,000 votes - 8th place). While the party has not directly run any candidates since the late 1980s, the CPUSA sometimes backs some candidates in various local elections (often in Northeastern industrial communities) and engages in grassroots political and labor union organizing. In the 1998 elections, longtime CPUSA leader Hall actually urged party members to vote for all of the Democratic candidates for Congress -- arguing that voting for any progressive third party candidates would undermine the efforts to oust the "reactionary" Republicans from control of Congress.

Regarding 'clean air' without 'cigarette smoke'-- Pollution in our world effects two essential aspects of our planet: air and water. Although their pollutants are emitted in completely different ways, they both harm living organisms. Air pollution is predominately emitted though the exhaust of motor vehicles and the combustion of fossil fuels, whereas water pollution is the result of industrial waste and environmental accidents.
So perhaps you are living in a bubble-you desire communism-clean air and water we will mention as well. How much chlorine - which is a carcinogenic is put in the water you are drinking? Hope you have one of the best water systems in the world too. I do.
Everyone needs to be more personally accountable for self and family - not letting the government take on all the rolls.
