City Council Smoking Pt II

Round Two starts off with:

Maureen Kahn, president and CEO of Blessing Hospital.

I'm guessing that the speak will be on the hazards of smoking and second hand smoke. NO possible way this person will know the economic impact that will be imposed on local businesses. Their employees still run across the street to smoke.

Next:

The council also is slated to hear from Amy Shirey of Quincy on the results of a survey conducted in February 2006 for the Coalition for a Smoke Free Quincy.

A year old survey. Not all the details about the "survey" are being released to the public. Questions may have been asked in a way to skew the outcome to favor to coalition.
My survey didn't lean towards that big of a spread. ALL the questions are listed. ALL the answers are here.

Maybe the survey was just democrats?

Fire, your survey was invalid, ballot stuffing.

Fire, I agree with all your posts/feuds cept this one, I will respectfully refrain from posting (calling smokers names, mostly) & wait for the next issue.

I do want to re-visit that sheeple concept, though!

I went to Seattle two weeks ago. They have the no-smoking thing going on....I went to the bars that typically attract 21-45 and it was packed. I spoke with the bartenders and staff and they said they did not see any change in crowds. I know most do not want to see this, but it did not hurt this establishment. If the place has a reason for people to go, they will go. I hope my businesses go this way, WITHOUT told to do so.

Rocky, I went to Springfield this weekend and the bars were half-full (whereas bartenders said they used to be packed).

I'm willing to bet people in Quincy will act more like people in Springfield than people in Seattle.

Let the owners decide. They're the ones who paid for their businesses and pay the costs to continue to exist.

If you don't like smoking, go someplace that doesn't allow smoking.

It's called compromise, a grand American tradition.

But of course it's not really about smoking. It's about power and control and the ability to tell other people what to do, rather like a certain crime that is also about power and not...

Do thank you for stopping by. And thank you again for the refrain from name calling too.

There are several posts here that give both sides of the issue, which is where I'd like this to go.

I agree with each and every study done on the hazards of smoking and second hand smoke, but how many studies have been done on the economic side of the story?

I've seen NONE.

Just pure speculation.

P.S. - May run the poll again now that I have turned off the "ballot stuffing" option.

I watched the City Council meeting and had to laugh at Blessings explanation of their smoking ban. " We didn't MAKE our employees quit". No, you just booted them off the property and forced them go across the street.

This is equivalent to saying "We don't punish criminals, we just don't allow them to leave the prison"

I'm FOR the smoking ban, let's just say we'll get a better group of speakers next time! JeeZ! How much does Kahn make a year to run that first aid station? And the other gal, reminded me of high school speech class. Even Gabe McClean could have trumped them!

You guys won that round without even showing up! But that was just our second string! We'll have to bring that B---- back from Springfield, besides, she wasn't a bad lookin broad, anyway.

Wouldn't it be easier to just split the country in two parts. One side for those who love freedom and wish to be able to live a life of choice. The other side where all these want to be dictators can go and dictate to their hearts desire how one another is going to live.
