QPD Cracking Down On DUI's

Ya can click on the link above and read the whole article from WGEM's web
page. I just want to point out several quotes from it.

Chief of Police is quoted as:

"DUIs may be a concern in the Quincy area"

"We haven't had a surge"

"not more drunk drivers"

"50 percent above last year's DUI break."

"The Quincy Police Department is confident the number of DUIs will be down by the end of the year"

I don't know about the rest of the city of Quincy feels about this, but I for one think time and effort is being wasted for the the all mighty dollars being generated off of the DUI cases. Lets face it. Quincy is a German town. The people of Quincy like to drink beer. Can you explain why the K of C BBQ is one of the largest in the state ?? Why the majority of events in the city serve beer at their events?? We like BEER!!! Now don't get me wrong, DUI is against the law and violators should be prosecuted....BUT, to sit in Taco Bells parking lot and wait for the poor sucker that doesn't use his signal to turn onto Broadway as he leaves is almost entrapment not enforcement.

Meth is a much larger problem in this area and you can read about it here.

.....and as I write this I see that the QPD is stepping up the K9 force by 1. Good start.

What amazes me is the with all the technology out there, we can't have a "methalizer" that drivers would blow into to determine if the driver is under the influence of Meth. I mean come on...with all that toxic crap that is used in the making of this stuff, no one can come up with anything better than a urine sample ??

Guess for now, I will have to watch how much I drink and watch how I drive home, but for once...just once, I would like to see patrol cars lined up on Broadway as I approached and have the officer lean in my window and ask " Have you been using Meth tonight?"....just as I glance over to see a line of outdoor toilets on a portable trailer...............

Couple of thoughts for your consideration:

1. Take the test of driving skill at .000 and then .08. See if you feel the same way afterward;

2. You set up a false choice between meth enforcement and traffic safety compliance. Patrol Officers aren't generally doing task force work and they're not always on calls so they do traffic safety enforcement. Move more patrol officers from patrol to special duty and you lose a substantial property crime (vandalism, burglary) deterrent.

3. If an officer effects a vehicle stop and sees something suggestive of meth, he has a procedure for investigating beyond just writing a citation.

You express all this stuff as a zero sum game and it really doesn't work that way.

Are you saying Meth is not a problem in Quincy and DUI is?

Is this the same type of deterent we get from the death penalty? boy those seem to work!! I mean murders seem be really down in the US! <--sarcastic.

;)

p.s. I am pro death penalty before you guys get going on that subject. I just don't think it works as a deterent to future crimes.

p.s.s Dem signs in ones yard is not a deterent to making future wagers either!

This just in:

"Police targeting Broadway traffic"

Surprised ??

Move'em off all the other streets, put them all on Broadway, and then arrest them all. Ever seen a slaughterhouse in operation? Kinda works just the same way...

If Quincy is a German town then ya'll shouldn't mind having German laws-
BAC> 0.05, or sometimes as low as 0.03 is illegal resulting in driving prohibition, rehabiliation and fines
BAC> 0.11 leads to jail time and suspension of license

Call a cab or get a dd, i've had too many friends grow up without parents because of you sick bastards

Germany also has the autobahn, where as big q-city has enforcement @ 31 MPH.

I think everyone's point is that we have enough DUI enforcement! SHIT, It seems like QPD only cares about DUI's! We have alot of other crimes to be worried about in this area.

We have a MAJOR METH problem that the majority of our community either does not realize or does not care about! QPD should be using thier assets to tackle this problem instead of how fast we drive down Quincy's most traveled road!

On a side note. Has anyone else ever wondered why the speed limit on Broadway is 30?????? Go to any other city our size or larger and a 4 lane road such as Broadway would have a 45 MPH speeed limit! What gives??

And why was the speed limit on 36th St. between Broadway and State St. reduced a couple years back from 35 MPH to 30 MPH???? Shouldn;t this street be 45MPH also????

DUI's are not a problem in Quincy if you are a big time developer with multiple dui's and apparently some dirt on the state's attorney. Just agree to build a house for humanity and they will write you up in the Herald Rag as being a wonderful guy doing good for the community. Joe Six Pack's ass goes to jail.

Hey Tony, regarding your comment about impairment, at what point am I subject to an alcohol related charge in Quincy?

Is it .08, .06, .04?

Seems like if you don't blow a .08, these peckers can still nail one's ass for some variation of intoxication.

Your comments please.

enforcement starts today on Broadway between the hours of 4:00 to 7:00

a PSA for you folks

UMRBlog said...

Anon 2119,

You are correct. A BAC below .08 is not necessarily a walk.

Anonymous said...

So what happens at .04 or .06 in a traffic stop. A .04 is what, 2-3 beers? A couple of highballs.

Like so many before me have pointed out, we're over the top here in Quincy/Adams County.

Anon 0847,

If you don't accept that mobile patrol officers deter burglaries and strong-arm robberies, it's because you have an agenda that won't let you see it.

The death penalty deterrent argument is another discussion. It's not proximate in time. Getting picked up while you carry the TV and stereo out the front door is very proximate in time and usually ruins a burglar's whole day.

UMRBlog said...

Anon 2337,

The BAC thing is not a Quincy Thing. It's an Illinois thing. In fact, you find very few Low-BAC prosecutions here (unless they are polydrug cases). Some of the Southeastern Counties love 'em.

So don't tee Quincy Up on that one.

Explain to me how 10 officers at a "checkpoint" at 11 pm are detering a crime on the other end of town....

The key word here is "MOBILE"...

Thats a nice way to put "old fart" j/k I think he has the same age discrimination problem that I do but on the other side of the fence.

Tony,

"If you don't accept that mobile patrol officers deter burglaries and strong-arm robberies, it's because you have an agenda that won't let you see it."

first, no agenda.

second, for something to be a deterent you must be dealing with a rational person. In cases of "Strong-arm robberies" you are not dealing with a person that society would deem rational.

third, WHEN QPD OFFICERS BEGIN TO HOLD THEMSELVES TO THE SAME LEVEL OF THE LAW IN REGARDS TO DUI'S WE WILL STOP BITCHING ABOUT SAID DEPARTMENT!!!!! JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE GONE TO AN ACADEMY DOES NOT GIVE THEM OR THE QPD ADMINISTRATION THE RIGHT TO VIOLATE THESE LAWS EITHER.

forth, you really don;t want me to start listing names of officers and QPD administration accompanied by dates and locations do you they violated such laws.

fifth, yes I keep very good files alllthe way to the TOP of that department. so if your deterent rational really does work my ass is covered.

;)

I don't understand why ISP doesn't set up at 36th & Harrison and 36th & State on KC weekend. It's no secret that there is far, far more alcohol consumption on that weekend than on Labor Day weekend, yet they go whole hog on Labor Day.

If ISP would set up on KC weekend, you can rest assured the heat would be on the City Fathers to end this nonsense.

If we are a 'home rule' community, we ought to be able to instruct the ISP to cover the area highways and stay the hell out of Q.

Think about it!!!
