Some get it, Some don't.

Quincy engineer Mike Klingner says the time may be right to consider building a major new tourist attraction on Quincy's riverfront. Click Here.

The group envisions a $40 million to $50 million center overlooking the river. It would feature an elaborate aquarium along with a series of educational areas offering insight into a wide range of river-related topics and issues.

From QNO 11.2.08

The $20 million riverfront condominium project, which the city considers the cornerstone of a riverfront renaissance, is on hold while developers wait out the nation's economic downturn.

Sheila Morgan of Shortridge Construction confirmed Friday morning that the project has been delayed indefinitely.

"It's just on hold until after the financial mess straightens out," Morgan said. "We would be hopeful late winter or early spring (to resume), but it depends on how long this thing drags on."

  2. Mike Klingner seems to be doing a good job of spending city money.

    Hydro

    Museum

What has he spent HIS money on?

All his ideas involve taxpayers dollars.

  3. Who in the QHW article doesn't stand to profit off of this idea?

  4. A 10 acre pool? Freakin' SWEET.

  5. why don't they just turn downtown into the large pool with the aquarium hanging off the cliffs instead of the condos. Then those who come to town for the new Salvation Army will have somewhere to entertain themselves with (hopefully) free passes

  6. Two words...Quinsippi Island.

  7. Donnie bought some of the trains and skyride from the glory days of Quinsippi Island. Maybe he could trade them to city to wipe out his inflated debt the city created out of thin air.

  8. Can't blame them for trying but anything they build needs to be 100% self-sufficient and privately paid-for and not on the taxpayer dime.

The park district should lease the land to whoever is willing to develop it and then once it is finished, sell it to them for a pre-negotiated price.

Quincy needs someone like Winegard in Burlington who developed Fun City....but that is all tied to a Casino.

  9. Does anyone know how the indoor waterpark in Dubuque was funded? That city seems some years ahead of Quincy vis'a'vis riverfront development.

  10. As I understand it, part of where this idea came from is Dubuque project

    Link here: http://partners.dubuque365.com/peninsula/index.html

Word is they had a BIG endowment to get it started. Wanna guess where from?

    See here: http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-152222748.html

That's right! Their local casino funded a big part of it. HMMMM...Dubuque, Burlington, Waterloo, Davenport...excellent riverfront developments and all have a Casino. Trend?

Can we hit a rewind button to 10 years ago when Quincy City Council decided not to agressively push for river-front casino development?

  12. I am just not even close to sold on this boondoggle . Every damn time I read "tourists" and "Quincy" I puke in my mouth .

The only way folks would flock here is if Disney built a theme park here and that will never happen .

No one but us gives a rats @ss that Lincoln and Douglas had a debate here. I hate to be the guy crapping on the parade , but it's true.

I say we start simple . Lets enhance the stuff we have and try and fix our local economy . Lets see what the residents want from our park system .

If people want to see fish in the river , lets buy them a pole and bait .

  14. Come to think of it, an aquarium at
North Second Street would overlook the river.

  18. Like Mayor Morality is going to support that.

His master Chuck Scholz didn't support it.

  19. By the way - isn't the money supposed to come from federal flood related funds?

Always nice when those with a vested interest (landowners, realtors, bad architects) suggest that the government and taxpayers foot the bill for their "great" idea...
